The evolution of the peace sign
The evolution of the peace sign. In World War II this symbol indicated "victory". Beginning with the Vietnam War it became the symbol for "peace". President Nixon used it hoping everyone would think he is cool.
But considering these girls in this photo (discovered on the site for the June 6, edition of the Huffington Post, url = http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/301200/slide_301200_2533270_free.jpg?1370430061946) listed among 198 pictures of Turkey protesters it is hard to tell what the symbol means now.
Are they using it to represent solidarity with their cause. Does it mean F the establishment? One might guess that this may be the case if one considers these girls saw the symbol in old photos of hippies during the Vietnam War protests and unknowingly decided the symbol meant FTE rather than peace. Maybe there is a totally different connotation for the symbol in Turkey. Maybe I'm over thinking the thing and they just want the police to stop fighting against their protest, in which case they are using the symbol for a peace sign.
Peace is a worthwhile, but unfortunately unrealistic goal. But, I guess it's worth trying for anyway, as long as you don't become a slave or permit tyrants to dominate the world in the attempt.
Peace
Rick
